Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan is setting up shop in Atlanta, tapping a 20-year veteran of Alston & Bird to lead the new office.
Debra Bernstein has joined Quinn Emanuel as the managing partner of its new Atlanta office, the firm announced Monday. She's an antitrust litigator whose clients have included computer giant Dell in a series of lawsuits.
She's also represented AMVAC Chemical Corp., which manufactures agricultural and commercial chemical products. In announcing Bernstein's hire, Quinn Emanuel touted that she has secured more than $1 billion in settlements.
Bernstein is the firm's only partner in Atlanta for now, but she noted that Quinn Emanuel also started with only one attorney in New York and two attorneys in London in 2001 and 2008, respectively. Since then, New York has grown to become Quinn Emanuel's largest office while London is the firm's largest office overseas, she added.
Atlanta is a major market that is home to many of Quinn Emanuel's important clients, Bernstein said.
"The plan is to grow this office," Bernstein said, before adding there are no "pre-conceived notions about what the size of this office will be."
Quinn Emanuel, which also launched a new Austin, Texas, office last month, wasn't the only law firm planting new flags on Monday. Holland & Knight announced that it is opening an office in Orange County, California, with a team of nine litigators from the Enterprise Counsel Group.
Holland & Knight already has offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco, but Orange County "is a very attractive market for us," firm managing partner Steven Sonberg said in a press release. "Some of the country's leading companies are headquartered there, as well as several tech companies and start-ups."
Simpson Thacher, meanwhile, on Monday announced it will open an office in Brussels later this summer following Britain's departure from the European Union.
Citing Brexit, Bill Dougherty, the chairman of Simpson Thacher's executive committee, said companies "will face continued challenges in navigating an evolving legal framework." The firm's Brussels office will center around antitrust and competition issues before various EU agencies and bodies and will be led by partner Antonio Bavasso, a recent recruit from U.K. firm Allen & Overy.
Last month, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison and Shook, Hardy & Bacon added offices in San Francisco and New York, respectively.
UPDATE: This story was updated to note that Quinn Emanuel also opened a new location in Austin earlier this year.
