(Reuters) - A Texas-based insurance company fired one of its senior lawyers, the company said Thursday, after the attorney was identified as one of the hundreds of supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump who stormed the U.S. Capitol a day earlier.
Goosehead Insurance said in a Thursday morning tweet that associate general counsel Paul MacNeal Davis is "no longer employed" at the company. Davis was not reachable for comment on Thursday.
He joined the Dallas-area company in mid-2020. His profile on the State Bar of Texas website lists a number for law firm Clark Hill. Court records show he also previously worked at Andrews Kurth, since merged to become Hunton Andrews Kurth. Representatives for those firms did not immediately respond to request for comment.
Mark Jones, Goosehead chair and chief executive, said Thursday in an internal memo reviewed by Reuters that the insurance agency was "surprised and dismayed to learn that one of our employees, without our knowledge or support, participated in a violent demonstration at our nation's capital yesterday."
"After investigating the situation, we decided to part ways with this individual," he said in the memo. "While we support our employees' right to vote and express themselves politically, we do not condone violent or illegal acts. This one former employee's actions are not reflective of our company culture or values, and we are disappointed with his behavior."
The memo came after journalist Roger Sollenberger on Wednesday posted on Twitter a video Davis had posted on Instagram, which showed him outside of the U.S. Capitol during the riot and questioning the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
"This is Paul Davis. Paul is a lawyer. He's also associate general counsel & director of human resources at Goosehead Insurance," Sollenberger said in his Twitter post, which had been shared over 20,000 times and liked more than 30,000 times as of Thursday afternoon. "Today he stormed the capitol building in an attempt to stage a coup against the US government and documented it (!) on Instagram. @followgoosehead"
Goosehead responded to Sollenberger in a Twitter post Thursday, saying "This individual is no longer employed by Goosehead."
Several prominent U.S. lawyers - including the chief legal officers of Microsoft Corp and Uber Technologies Inc - have condemned Wednesday's assault on the Capitol Building, which disrupted the certification of President-elect Joe Biden's victory, left a woman dead by gunfire and caused shock and outrage around the world.
